Why Can Hawaii Tourism Feel Like an Episode of Three’s Company?

  1. In Three’s Company, Jack, Janet, and Chrissy constantly found themselves in situations that could have been avoided with a little more awareness, communication, and respect—much like how tourists sometimes stumble into trouble by not understanding local customs, wildlife protection laws, or cultural expectations.

  2. Just like Mr. Roper jumping to conclusions, some visitors assume they can interact with Hawaii’s natural beauty however they want, without realizing there are rules and reasons behind them (e.g., sea turtles, sacred sites, and environmental protections).

  3. And much like Jack pretending to be something he's not to stay in his apartment, some travelers “play along” with local culture without fully respecting it, mistaking casual participation for true understanding.

At our latest trivia night, themed ‘Three’s Company,’ teams put their knowledge to the test with rounds all about the power of threes—completing famous trios, linking Before & After song titles, identifying three actors who played the same role, and decoding clues pulled straight from the Three’s Company theme song. But just like in the sitcom, where mix-ups and miscommunication drove the comedy, some answers led to hilarious misunderstandings—much like a recent real-life moment in Hawaii that proved not all confusion comes with a laugh track.

Seven teams competed for the trophy. It was a tight finish and team DOGE CAT eked out a 1-point win over team TRIPLE HANDY. Congrats and thanks to all who came out to play!

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES: Disney actress China Anne McClain faced criticism after posting a video of herself touching a resting sea turtle in Hawaii. Unaware of the state's environmental protection laws, her actions highlighted the need for tourists to educate themselves about local regulations and wildlife protection efforts.

Hawaii's natural beauty and unique wildlife are integral to its identity. Visitors are encouraged to admire these wonders from a distance, ensuring their preservation for future generations. This incident serves as a reminder that, much like the comedic errors in 'Three's Company,' misunderstandings in real life can have significant consequences.

As we enjoy the lightheartedness of our favorite sitcoms, let's also take lessons from them. Awareness and respect are key when exploring new environments. By doing so, we ensure that our adventures are both enjoyable and responsible, keeping the spirit of Aloha alive.
